Wrestling for St. Cloud State University, Gene Hanemann' senior campaign was one of the most dominant in the school's 60-year history.  In addition to his National Championship at 158-pounds, Hanemann set single season school records for wins (38) and takedowns (110).

Prior to his National Championship season, Hanemann was a two-time Division 2 All-American at Southern Connecticut State University, finishing in 8th place in 1993 and 5th place in 1994.

A Region 6 Hall of Fame member and two-time District 23 Champion for Rumson, Hanemann has the distinction of handing Middletown South's Glenn Pritzlaff his first loss at the high school level in the finals of the 1990 Neptune Classic Tournament.
